Grant Application

Joe Suyama, MD, of Emergency Department at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC

Proposed Innovation

The Emergency Department can be a frightening and foreign place for patients. Although much has been done to create an ED atmosphere that promotes healing and communication, patients may still feel lost or powerless due to their unfamiliarity both with the setting and what to expect during their visit.

The MINDER (Maximizing Information Delivery in the Emergency Room) tablet-based application is designed to enhance the patient experience by providing patients with a personalized roadmap for their anticipated journey through the ED.

Improvements in Action

With funding from the Beckwith Institute, an interactive application will be developed to keep patients informed of their progress as they go through laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, and consultation during their ED stay. Personalized information provided via the application will include photos or symbols of each care team member, prompts about what to expect and ask, expected wait times specific to their care, access to educational material and resources, and information regarding follow-up calls or assistance with medications after discharge.

Results — In Progress

Providing ED patients with real-time, personalized information using familiar and easy-to-use technology, will improve the overall patient experience by enabling them to feel more engaged and better informed. Outcomes will be measured through immediate impression and follow-up patient satisfaction surveys.
